Definition of Technology Literacy Putting a face to the Problem - Meet David and Joanna [Home]
|
What is the Digital Divide? Simply put, the Digital Divide is the gap between people with access to computers, technology, and the ability to use technology, and those that do not have access to computers and technology. As our society becomes more and more reliant on computer knowledge and technology, people without access to computers, or who are unable to use them or see a use for them, are at a distinct disadvantage to those with ready access and user knowledge. Even jobs that do not require a college diploma often expect workers to have basic computer skills. People on the wrong side of the divide are increasingly being shut out of opportunities, education, and jobs because of their lack of technical competency. Students who arrive at college lacking computer and technology skills and who lack technological fluency are at a distinct disadvantage in a tertiary education environment, compared to their technology-fluent peers. |
