Putting a face to the problem: meet David and Joanna

David and Joanne are both getting ready to attend Highly Selective University as members of the class of 2008. David and Joanne were both accepted under Early Decision. Both have similar GPAs, SAT scores, and extracurricular activities. Both are described by teachers as bright, hard-working, and destined for success. David is a caucasian man who grew up in Lake Forest, Illinois and attended Lake Forest Academy, a private preparatory school not far from his home. David’s father is a partner in a law firm in downtown Chicago, and David is working at this firm for the summer, in order to save money for college.

Joanne is a hispanic woman who grew up in Roger’s Park, a lower middle class to middle class neighbourhood in the city of Chicago. Joanne attended a Chicago public high school. Joanne’s parents are divorced, and she lives with her mother, who is a file clerk at a law firm in downtown Chicago, in the same law firm in which David's father is a partner. Joanne’s mother was able to get a job for her daughter at the law firm for the summer, so that she, like David, can save money for college.
